Smith Signs To Fish For Carson Newman

Austin Smith, along with his boat mate Riley Faulkner, has been dominating the high school fishing scene this season. Now his efforts have earned him a spot fishing in college.

Smith signed to be an Eagle Angler at Carson Newman on Tuesday. Smith said he chose the Jefferson City institution of higher learning because it felt like home.

Smith is looking to major in nursing.

Smith will be thrown into action right away. Unlike many sports their is no transition period and college anglers see the water right away.

Carson Newman University is a Christian liberal arts university in Jefferson City, Tennessee, United States. Founded in 1851, the university currently enrolls about 2,500 students. Studies are offered in approximately 90 different academic programs. Carson-Newman is affiliated with the Tennessee Baptist Convention.

Cougar Tennis Continues To Win

Cougar Tennis continued its rise against Knox Central last week. The Cougars traveled to Tyson Park to take on the Bobcats and came home with a win.

Jake Lane, who remains undefeated on the year, won his match 8-5, at the top seed. Garrett Medley and Jordan Tolliver also won their singles matches. The Cougars dominated the Bobcats in doubles play. The Cougars won the match 6-3.

Lady Cougar Tennis did not fare as well. The fell 1-8 to the Lady Bobcats. It was not all doom and gloom as Skylar Boshears won her first singles match as a Lady Cougar.

Cougar Tennis Sweeps Claiborne

Mattie Brown had a big tie breaker win against Claiborne County

Cougar Tennis traveled to Claiborne County after a long spring break layoff to get back into the swing of things.

The Cougars swept the Bulldogs in exciting fashion. Timmy Zupancic had a pitched battle with Nick Fannon at the top seed and won in a tie breaker 7-6. The rest of the matches saw domination by the Cougars. Jake Lane, Preston Bowman, and Manny Alcaraz all had 6-1 victories. Gabe Carroll won his match 6-4 and Jordan Tolliver won 6-3.

In double the Cougars continued their winning ways Zupancic and Lane swept their opponents 6-0. Ty Seiber and Garrett Medley won 6-4. Carroll joined forces with Spenser Boshears to win 6-2. The COugars had a total 9-0 victory.

The Lady Cougars struggled a bit and fell 3-6 to the Lady Bulldogs. Mattie Brown won in a tie breaker 7-6. Trople sport athlete Macy Monday picked up a 6-4 win. Zuzana Oriacakove picked up a 6-3 win.

Lady Cougar Softball Has Big Week

Some big things have happened for Lady Cougar Softball since the season began.

Taylor Shanks got her first career homerun in a loss to Oak Ridge earlier in the season.

As a team they have picked up some big wins in the last week.

Over the previous weekend they picked up a big win over the Lady Indians of Oneida, avenging an early season loss. They defeated the Lady Indians 8-1. Jacolby Lane got things rolling as she hit an in park home run. Jenna Byrd had an RBI double in the game.

A couple of days later the Lady Cougars battled the Lady Panthers of Cumberland Gap. The Lady Cougars posted a tight 11-10 win that day.

Then they battled the Lady Highlanders of Scott County on Thursday. The Lady Cougars won in a dominating fashion as the game was called via the mercy rule as they Lady Cougars were up 17-1 after the third inning concluded. The Lady Cougars had a big opening volley. The first inning saw Brenna Rutherford go two for two at the plate with a trio of RBI’s. Jenna Byrd had a big first as well with a three RBI double. Byrd also had an RBI triple in the game.

Cougar Middle School Soccer Picks Up Big WIn

Cougar Soccer has had some early success on the high school level. Now it is the turn of their younger ounterparts to bask in the spotlight of victory.

Claiborne County Soccer made the trek down the valley to take on the Cougars at Ken Snodderly Park. They went back to Tazewell with a loss as the Cougars defeated them 7-1.

Caleb Dabney had the hat trick with three goals. Landon York had a pair of goals of his own. The scoring was rounded out by Caden Bostic and Colton Robertson with a goal each.
