At the start of the season expectations were not high for Cougar basketball. It had been a couple of years since the team had a post season win and even regular season wins were few and far between. This year the Cougars had a new coach in Matt Housely, but it is tough to win as a first year coach, right? Wrong! Housely proved to be one of the sparks that the long-suffering Cougar basketball program needed. He took the team from the basement of the district standings to the middle of them and picked up a pair of tournament wins on the way to the semifinals of the District 3-AAA tournament.
The semifinal match was with district powerhouse and sate ranked Karns. Unfortunately as hot as the Cougars have been the Beavers proved to be too powerful on Saturday and picked up a 69-46 win. This puts the Cougars in Tuesday night’s consolation game against the tournament host, the Oak Ridge Wildcats.
The Cougars were led in scoring by Nick Litton and Tuffy Shoupe with 12 points each against Karns. Ethan Simpson kicked in 7 points and Corey Poteet had 6.
The Cougars will also play in the regional tournament on Saturday though their opponent and site have yet to be determined.
