The Campbell County basketball squads welcomed visiting Halls to John R.W. Brown gymnasium last night for what turned into two thrilling battles. Unfortunately only one went the way CCHS fans wanted.

The Lady Cougars and Lady Red Devils battled their way through a close first half that saw a 26-26 halftime score. However the third quarter was all Lady Cougars. Alyssa Brown and Kayleigh Jordan scored all 16 of the Lady Cougars 3rd quarter points while strong team defense held Halls to 7 points. Heading into the 4th it was 42-33 CCHS.

Unfortunately the tide shifted on the whistle of the officials. At one point the second half foul total grew to 11 on the Lady Cougars to only 3 on Halls. The double bonus greatly aided the Lady Red Devils cause as they erased the Lady Cougar lead with a barrage of free throws. The Lady Cougars had the ball with 5.2 seconds remaining but an errant 3 point attempt allowed Halls to escape with a 53-50 win.

On the boys side a similar scene unfolded. The game was hard fought with the teams fighting fiercely in the paint for buckets. The first half saw stellar play from Seth Ward, Nate Walden and Devon Jones on offense and strong team defense that allowed the Cougars to hit the lockerroom leading 25-22.
A hotly contested but heavily defense laden 3rd quarter saw the Cougars score 9 points and the Red Devils put 10 on the board. After 3 it was 34-32. The Cougars looked snakebit to begin the 4th. After a Bryson Horton layup made it 36-32 Halls went on a methodical 9-0 run. With 5 minutes to go in the final frame Halls led by 5 and the Cougars looked to be fading.

However several Cougars refused to lose. Devon Jones began to attack the basket and get to the free throw line. On defense he had a key steal that led to a basket. He had a great long assist that got Jonathan Long a layup. Nate Walden drove over and around the Halls defense for a layup of his own. Riley Faulkner battled in the paint for offensive rebounds.

The game was coming down to the wire. The Cougars led 47-46 after a Halls 3 corner 3 dropped home. Halls decided to play defense, trying to force a steal. When that didn’t work they finally fouled Horton with 37.9 to go. Horton missed the free tosses but Long was able to out position the Halls post for the rebound. This retained possession for the Cougars. Long got the ball to Jones and Halls had to foul the sensational sophomore. Jones calmly knocked down both free throws and gave Campbell County at 49-46 edge.
Halls managed to get into the paint after and offensive rebound of their own and they cut the lead to 49-48 with 12 seconds to go. Jones managed to take the inbounds pass and he was fouled again. Just like he had seconds earlier under pressure, Jones dropped in a pair of free tosses, the Cougars led 51-48. The Red Devils failed to convert and Coach Clawson and his squad had secured the first district win on the season.

Devon Jones led the way with 21 points, Nate Walden put in 15 and Seth Ward had 9.
