The Cougars returned to John R.W. Gymnasium on Monday night, hosting Cocke County.
The Lady Cougars led after the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarters, riding the hot start to the game by freshman Izzy Profitt. Unfortunately for CCHS the fouls mounted quickly in the second half, which allowed Cocke County to pick up easy points.
Nothing was coming easy on the Lady Cougars end of things. Cold shooting, turnovers and a couple of key made 3s by Cocke sealed the deal and they took the 60-55 win back to Newport. Profitt led the way for CCHS with 18 pts, Kayleigh Jordan added 11.
The boys squad came out with focus and intent on laying waste to Cocke County. They succeeded. Bryson Horton scored off the opening tip and the race was on. Devon Jones had a scoring barrage with quick 3s and drives to the basket while breaking the Cocke Co press. Nate Walden, Riley Faulkner and Noah Burden all had key scores in addition to Horton and Jones’ great play. It was 23-6 after one and 45-24 at the half.
In the second half it was more of the same early. This time recently returned Spencer Boshears went on a mini-run of his own with a three point wave that punched the lead up to 30 after his quick 9 points. Soon after Coach Clawson inserted much of the Cougars bench into the game.
Cocke County never stopped trying and the Cougars got a bench burst from Burden, David Adkins and Garrett Medley to seal the 84-70 win over a valiant visiting team that fought til the end. Jones led the way with 20 points on the evening. Boshears chipped in 12.
