As the regular season winds down for middle school football the action will be heating up at Jacksboro Middle School’s Gibson Field. Friday night, due to the Cougars playing on TV for Rivalry Thursday, the annual Egg Bowl will take place. The Eagles and the Owls will battle over the traveling Egg Bowl Trophy. This game is always a war no matter what the records for the cross county rivals stand at.
This year the Eagles are the defending TMSAA champions and are playing at home. They remain unbeaten since the 2016 season. Will Lester stands to be the next Eagle to join the 1,000 yard club as he is a shade over 300 yards away from the mark. The Eagles are the only team in recent years to defeat the Oneida Indians in consecutive seasons. Despite this the Eagles struggled with Lake City in their previous game. The Lakers and the Eagles slugged it out until a Peyton Ferguson interception kept the Lakers from scoring and preserved the Eagle Victory.
In spite of their record the Owls have been tough all year. Kainen Fernandez is a multi threat quarterback as he is just as effective running the ball as he is throwing it. Devon Jones is a potent weapon in all three phases of the game. In their last game against William Blount the Owls lost close shoot out in one of the highest scoring middle school games in recent memory. Though the Owls fell 54-42 they proved that they were fighters til the end.
This game could come down to who has the biggest plays and both teams are big play capable.
