It has been the “Year of the Eagle” in sports but Jacksboro Middle School is also earning honors on the academic side as well. Jacksboro Middle School is the first school in the state and one of the first schools in the nation to be named an America’s Entrepreneurial School.
Director of Schools Jennifer Fields was the principal at JMS when the school began their journey to this distinction. Fields told her former charges that they had made history when she first learned that this honor was coming their way. She was on hand Friday when the school was presented the banner that officially recognized them as an America’s Entrepreneurial School.
Gretchen Thomas was Field’s vice principal and is now the Eagle’s principal.Thomas told everyone assembled what a huge honor it was for the school to receive this recognition.
The journey to this honor started when a half dozen teachers from the school traveled to a conference in Charleston, West Virginia to train for the steps needed to start the process. While in the capitol of West Virginia the teachers, now known as the Tennessee Six, received the training that they needed to get this program going across the curriculum of the school.
When the Tennessee Six returned to JMS they took steps to spread what they had learn to the school. There as a student advisory board formed to involve the students in the process as well. Once the board was in place the lessons of entrepreneurship were taught at the school In the end it all came to fruition at the school’s annual STEM night.
Jacksboro Middle School has already received sustainable funding to continue this in the 2018-19 school year.
