LaFollette Police and the ambulance service responded to a shooting call today just after noon in the Food City area. Upon arrival they found a 13 year old male with injuries to his leg and left hand.
The injuries appeared to occur after the juvenile removed a handgun from the glove compartment of the vehicle in which he was sitting and accidentally discharged it. The juvenile was transported to UT hospital by ambulance with what was thought to be non-lifethreatening injuries.
This is the second accidental shooting in the last several years at the Food City area involving a juvenile. In August 2018 a young girl tragically lost her life in the prior incident after her brother accidentally discharged a parent’s firearm that was in the vehicle.
LPD will be handing relevant details of the incident to district attorney Jared Effler to decide on what, if any charges arise from the incident. No names are being released at this time.
