It was a blistering hot day at Oak Ridge Country club yesterday as the Cougar and Lady Cougar golfers took to the course for district tournament play. Jack Leach, sophomore sensation, played like a senior, carding a 73 to win the District Championship by a stroke.
Needing every shot to secure victory, Leach went for it all on the 18th and final hole. His whopping drive stuck at the very top of the hilly approach on the edge of the green. This gamble allowed Leach an easy chip and putt and made the difference in his taking home the title.
The Cougars and Lady Cougars finished 2nd and 3rd in team play respectively. This allowed them to move on to region play next week. Sadie Cox led the Lady Cougars and she tied for 2nd overall on the day. Morgan Gray and Molly Fields had solid rounds but the Lady Cougars missed senior Masynn Galyon on the day. Her presence would likely have allowed the Lady Cougars to contend for 1st place.
On the boys side, sophomore David Bates carded a 77 to compliment Leach’s 73, Dom Zupancic, Garrett Medley and Trevor Sharp were in the 80s on the day. Halls didn’t have anyone quite good enough to match Leach but their team effort allowed them to take home 1st place as a team, and avenge a loss to the Cougars from a few weeks ago.
The Cougars return to the links next Monday, once again at Oak Ridge Country Club, this time for region play. Only one team and a handful of individuals advance beyond this round. Farragut has top notch golfers, so the Cougars and Lady Cougars will have their work cut out for them, they’ve proven they can compete with any team in the area and Jack Leach has shown his mettle many times in 2019. It should make for another exciting day on the links for the Cougars.
