If you grew up a wrestling fan in the last 40 years you have likely have witnessed Tracy Smothers in action. The Springfield, Tennessee native received his training from the Fabulous One’s Steve Keirn and Stan Lane before his debut in 1982. It was not long after his debut that he became a regular on Memphis TV.

Though Smothers wrestled all over the world and spent time in WWF, WCW, and ECW he was well known for his time in the various promotions in East Tennessee. Smothers even wrestled a bear and took it to the mat several times.

Smothers is also well known and loved by many of his wrestling colleagues. He is known as a generous athlete who is always their to help young talent achieve their fullest potential.

But now Smothers is facing a battle like none he has faced before. The man also known as The Wild Eyed Southern Boy was diagnosed with cancer late last year. He stated in a Facebook post, “To all concerned I was diagnosed Nov.14 w Lymphoma cancer which now am on my 3rd treatment 3 to go Of Chemo which is shrinking the rapid growing tumors.Doc told me yrs ago I have blockage in my artery so here we are an have lost 45 percent of my heart use. Also he said I have lots of head, body trauma.Doc said I had a heart attack some time back an didn’t know it.Have felt bad for awhile now but thought I was getting old, lol. This is not fatal as its between my Pancreas,Colon, neck.A big TY to all of u but I look at it as getting a tube up,overhaul, tires rotated, oil change, etc.all in one lol. Remember LIFE is a BATTLE an I’m in it to win it so don’t hesitate in trying to be tough by putting off getting checked out in this day an age u never know?? GOD BLESS EVERYBODY.”

Unfortunately the wrestling business does not provide a health insurance plan as the athletes are considered independent contractors even on the highest level.

But Tracy is not in this battle alone. Kross Fire Wrestling, a long established local promotion based in Sevier County is putting on a benefit for Smothers this Friday night February 7th and it is shaping up to be quite the event. All of the proceeds from the event will go to help Tracy in this costly battle with cancer. The event will take place at the River Plantation RV Resort at 1004 Parkway Sevierville, TN 37862. There are a variety of ticket levels available general admission being $10. There are VIP tivkets available that include a meet and great and early admission to the show.

It will be a star studded event that will be main evented by a tag team match in which WWE Hall of Famer Ricky Morton will team with King Shane Williams and rising superstar Kenzie Henry (managed by Smothers himself) battling Shane Andrews, Devin Driscoll and Mik Drake. Other matches will feature local favorites Menace and JDL. Fellow southern wrestling legend and trainer of the stars Dr. Tom Pritchard will be there as well.

Do not miss this chance to help one of the true good guys of pro wrestling.
