A couple of weeks ago I said I was done with the Halls issue. I lied. Frankly I did not know we would be facing them in the district tournament.
Not only did we face them in the tournament we handily defeated them. Though the game was close at times you could tell it was a special night for the Cougars. Last night was the return of Campbell County basketball to the district map. Far to long have our fans had to suffer through sub par seasons with no tournament wins. If not for the long time success of the Lady Cougars basketball in Campbell County would basically be a footnote.
No fans now is our time to shine on the court again. The recruiting pipelines to about 7 different counties are closing. The middle schools are talent rich. The underclassmen on the current team are talented and hungry for more success.
Most importantly of all we have a young and knowledgeable coaching staff. I knew Matt would do well. I know some of you are asking yourself, “Wait a minute this guy was pushing for Jon Higgins at one point.” That is true in the fact that Higgins had a resume that was unheard of in an applicant for a coaching position here. Do you know who else had a resume that impressive? Jerry Mynatt.
Coach Housely has taken this team from ruins to the region in one single season. I hope everyone in the county makes the trip to Oak Ridge Saturday because starting at 4:30 on you have some teams to pull for. The Lady Cougars have the best chance at going to the state tournament in decades. The Cougars are a team with a spark that has not been seen possibly since Matt Housely was playing.
Now on to the darker side of Halls. I hope this victory has put to rest one of the most shameful episodes in the history of any sport at CCHS. Now hopefully we don’t have to worry about seeing Campbell County School Board member Rector Miller sitting in his Halls colors grinning like a hyena when the Halls student section directs chants of inbreeding towards the students he supposedly represents the best interests of. This man is possibly one of the biggest frauds in the history of Campbell County politics, and that is a bold statement. He ran specifically to get rid of Coach Barry Jones, who called his son to the carpet for a shameful act. While this move has worked out for the best for the Cougars it does not justify why this man is on the school board. I know we have always been a county full of corrupt politicians but this is one of the worst examples of it. Unfortunately his school board seat is not up for another two years. Please voters of the first district remember this at the polls. Do not let time erode the misdeeds of Miller.
