The Campbell County Cougar tennis team traveled East Monday evening to take on the Claiborne Bulldogs. The Bulldogs entered the match unbeaten for both the boys team and girls teams with a district regular season crown already in the bag.
The Cougar boys squad also entered the match unbeaten, also having clinched, at worst, a district title share with their win over Oak Ridge last week. Claiborne County was led by outstanding freshman Eli England who is undefeated in individual play this year as the #1 seed for the Bulldogs. Cougar #1 Garrett Medley battled valiantly against England but lost his match.
As they have done all season, the lower seeded Cougars proved better than those who took the court for their opponents. #2 Jack Leach, #3 Drew Crowley, #4 Nate Walden and #5 Hayden Fields each took wins. This left the Cougars needing a doubles win to get to 5 wins in the best of 9 match.
Garrett Medley returned to the court with doubles partner Jack Leach and the pair put on an impressive display vs the excellent England and Bulldogs 2 seed Caleb Keck, winning 6-1 and clinching the Cougar victory to remain unbeaten. The teams of Drew Crowley and Nate Walden, and Spencer Boshears and Carson Meade also took home doubles wins for a final margin of 7-2 in the best of 9 match.
On the ladies side of the ledger the excellent Lady Bulldogs were too much for the Cougar netters. Claiborne showed why they are unbeaten by taking a 7-2 win. Shelby Bargy continued her excellent play with a 6-4 win over Claiborne #1 Carlye England, #6 seed Kayleigh Miesel grabbed a win as well for the Cougars.
The Lady Bulldogs swept through the middle seeds and the doubles matches on their way to 7 wins. Lady Cougars #5 seed, freshman Sydney Lane had an outstanding match with Claiborne’s Ily Russell, with Russell winning 7-6 after a tie breaker set went her way 7-5.
The Cougars have one remaining match before post season play begins. They travel to Union County to face a good Patriot team in the final district match of the year, a win for the boys locks up a solo district championship.
